Broad form insurance is meant to be a mix and match, tailor made insurance solution for each driver’s situation. However, in most cases it can also be called the most limiting type of insurance coverage at its most basic level. In many states, this type of insurance is not even allowable, making it even more confusing to consider. To add to the confusion, the term “broad form insurance” may refer to two different types of policies, depending on the insurance company and the state in which the policy is written.

Broad Form Insurance: The Broadest of Broad Definitions

In some cases broad form insurance might refer to a type of insurance that covers a wider range of incidents that might result in a loss. In those cases broad form insurance might be taken to mean:

broad form auto insurance

  • A policy that includes liability plus comprehensive, liability plus collision or liability and both types of additional coverage.
  • Because it covers so many types of incidents it covers natural events, including the weather and unnatural events such as a crime.

There are some considerations to keep in mind when choosing this type of coverage including whether or not it is worth it. Because there are so many added types of coverage it is likely that the cost of broad form insurance will be higher than just liability insurance. The more coverage you add, the higher the cost will become.

Broad Form Insurance: Named Operator Coverage

In other states, the coverage that is called “broad form” might refer to a policy that is technically named operator coverage. This is a very limited and risky type of coverage for a number of reasons, but it is far less expensive to consider. Before you even ask for quotes about this type of coverage, consider this:

  • Named operator coverage is not available in most states mainly because it is so risky.
  • As the name implies, this coverage covers ONE driver in whatever car that individual is legally driving. If you have more than one vehicle and you are the only driver of all, it makes sense. However, if there are other drivers in your home, it may not be the best option for your needs.
  • This is liability only coverage, which means that it does not provide protection for your own vehicle, only the legal responsibility you would have for others cars or injuries.
  • This coverage would not satisfy the requirements of most note holders, so it would not be appropriate for a newer car or an older car with a loan.
  • The insurance only covers one driver. If you allow anyone to borrow your car and he or she has an accident, it will not be covered.
  • This coverage is the most likely to result in a lawsuit or other legal dispute.
